Geek Talk

Just a little over a year ago, I left my software development job to become a stay-at-home mom. I’ve loved being available to my beautiful baby boy, but it wasn’t long before I realized that I needed some kind of creative outlet. And it wouldn’t hurt to contribute to the family finances, either.

After some prayer and Bible study, I fell in love with the idea of trying my hand at iPhone app development. My vision is to create simple apps that help believers in their day-to-day lives. So I looked to my own life for inspiration.

I found inspiration in my Scripture cards. I’d been taught in a Bible study to put verses that I wanted to pray on index cards. I put my Scripture cards in a little photo album, which was great for when I was home. But there was no way that I was going to carry that thing with me everywhere I went. I’d lose it for days in my own house just carrying it from room to room! I knew that I needed to create an app for that.

So I started the process of learning iPhone app development last spring. It’s been quite a learning curve, made more difficult by not having a lot of time to devote to my endeavor. After all, taking care of my little one takes priority. But after many months of learning, after many many late nights working after my little one was in bed, I finally have a working app!

I call it Lamplight, based on Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” It allows the user to create “stacks” of Scripture “cards.” The user can assign a photo to each stack if they wish. The verses are pulled automatically from the English Standard Version of the Bible, but you can copy and paste a different translation if you’d like. There’s also an area on each card to put your own notes. I use that section to put a reminder of what I’m using that verse to pray for, or to remind me of key words in the verse if I’m trying to memorize it.

I would love to get some feedback from users before submitting my app to the App Store. Anybody game? You’ll need an iPhone or iTouch to play along. Please email me if you’re interested in trying out Lamplight and giving me some feedback! It’s free!

I am so proud. Yesterday I shared my blogging woes and hopes, including the desire to get a new blog design. It was an epic tale, fraught with angst and the plea for a graphic artist. Well. Artist shmartist. I did a little googling and came across this software for creating logos, aptly named The [...]

10 iPhone Apps That I Love

February 3, 2010

A while back I made the bold statement that an iPhone is the new must-have item for mommies. I also made a wishy-washy statement about maybe one day writing a post about my favorite apps. And now, six weeks later, here it is. My sense of urgency is clearly alive and well. I’ll come out [...]
