A Verse to Help Us Pray for Sandy Hook

I was devastated Friday after hearing about the tragedy at Sandy Hook. I spent much of the weekend hugging my boys, contemplating the depravity of man, and praying for the Sandy Hook community.

One particular verse keeps coming to mind. I’m listing it here in several different translations in the hopes that it will inspire others to prayer.

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
(Psalm 34:18, New American Standard Bible)

If your heart is broken, you’ll find God right there;
if you’re kicked in the gut, he’ll help you catch your breath.
(Psalm 34:18, The Message)

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart,
And saves such as have a contrite spirit.
(Psalm 34:18, New King James Version)

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;
    he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
(Psalm 34:18, New Living Translation)

Keep praying. It’s no small thing.
